Symptom: Bad reviews or returns

Bad reviews or high returns on Amazon: find the cause, not the culprit

A falling rating or rising returns usually have one of two causes: the product doesn't do what buyers need, or the listing promised something different. The fixes are different, so the first job is to tell them apart.

Group reviews into themes

Single reviews are anecdotes. Read 1–3 star reviews and return reasons together and group them: fit, quality, missing parts, setup, expectations. Rank the themes by how often they appear.

Separate product problems from expectation problems

  • “Smaller than expected”, “not what the picture showed” – expectation. Fix the listing and images.
  • “Broke after a week”, “rough edges” – product. Fix it at the factory.
  • “Couldn't figure out how to use it” – instructions. Add or improve the insert.

Fix the cause before buying more traffic

Shoppers compare stars side by side. Below the leaders' rating, conversion and ad efficiency usually fall, and more traffic only spreads the problem.

For new products: plan the first reviews

A listing without reviews converts poorly, so it gets few sales – and few reviews. Use Amazon's own programs, such as Vine and the Request a Review button, and build them into the launch plan. Never offer incentives for reviews.

Modules for this stage

  • Reviews & Returns Analysis – What buyers praise, complain about and expected – turned into changes for product, listing and insert.
  • Sales Drop Diagnosis – The likely reasons sales dropped, each with the evidence and a way to confirm it.
